Health department wins first place – twice!

BOWLING GREEN – The Magoffin County Health Department won two first places at the Kentucky Rural Health Association’s conference in Bowling Green last week.

Previously, the Kentucky Rural Health Association (KRHA) and the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health sent an invite to the local health department, stating they were accepting poster proposals from researchers, students and community organizations utilizing evidence-based programs, to highlight all the great work going on across rural communities in the Commonwealth.

The Magoffin County Health Department and the Local Board for KY ASAP submitted their “Say No to Drugs Campaign” proposal and were accepted to do a poster presentation on the project for the annual conference, held on November 16 in Bowling Green.

Abbie Conley, with the Magoffin County Health Department, told the Independent, “Our ‘Say No to Drugs’ poster was displayed for a day at the conference and was judged by a committee and also was voted on by conference attendees. We were one of 24 posters statewide that was entered in the competition. To our surprise, we were selected by the committee as the first-place winner and also won first place by receiving the most votes by attendees of the KRHA conference and online voting.”

The “Say No to Drugs Campaign” involved Magoffin County Schools students in designing and distributing Say No to Drugs and Vaping posters, using the students’ ideas on how to make the message effective.

The Magoffin County Health Department and the Local Board for KY ASAP would like to give a special thanks to Operation UNITE, Magoffin County Board of Education, School Administrators, Mortimer Media, Jim Arnett, and Melissa Sloan with the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health.
