Helton retiring as superintendent

SALYERSVILLE – After five years at the reigns and 33 years in education, Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Scott Helton is retiring, with the school district starting the process of finding a new superintendent Tuesday afternoon.

The Magoffin County Board of Education met in special session on October 26, accepting the retirement and resignation of Superintendent Helton, effective November 1, 2021, and declared a vacancy in the superintendent position, also as of November 1.

Per state regulations, the board approved to authorize and direct notification of superintendent vacancy to the Kentucky Department of Education and posting the vacancy, as well as to authorize and direct the establishment of a superintendent screening committee, as required by law.

In the meantime, the board also appointed Chris Meadows as interim superintendent, starting next week.

The Independent plans to have a more in-depth story next week about Helton’s retirement.
