Hornets amass nearly 400 yards in district loss to Bulldogs

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County thrived offensively but couldn’t remain in the win column as Lawrence County pulled away to win 58-26 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 16.

The Hornets amassed 391 yards in the district loss.

Making the most of its offensive opportunities, Lawrence County scored 56 points after gaining 307 yards.

Moving ahead early, Lawrence County outscored Magoffin County 15-8 in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs led 37-14 at halftime and remained ahead throughout the second half.

Lawrence County outscored the Hornets 14-6 in the third quarter to extend its lead.

The Bulldogs rushed 24 times for 287 yards and five touchdowns in the district game.

Dylan Ferguson paced Lawrence County’s offensive attack, rushing seven times for 90 yards and one touchdown.

In a similar effort, Ryan Marcum rushed eight times for 87 yards and one touchdown during the Bulldogs’ win.
Reaching the endzone twice, Cody Crum, another productive Lawrence County running back, rushed five times for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

Chipping in on the ground for the Bulldogs, Lawson Baisden rushed two times for 47 yards and one touchdown.

Making an impact offensively and defensively, Baisden recorded two interceptions. Baisden returned one of the interceptions 55 yards for a touchdown.

Aden Barnett led the Hornets in the district matchup. Barnett completed 22 of 40 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown. The Magoffin County quarterback threw two interceptions. However, Barnett rushed 15 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Grayson Whitaker hauled in a scoring catch from Barnett. Delivering through the air and on the ground, Whitaker added a 58-yard rushing touchdown for the Hornets.

Emerging as Barnett’s top target, Ian McCarty hauled in eight receptions for 86 yards.

Following McCarty in the Hornets’ aerial attack, Brock Montgomery reeled in five receptions for 49 yards.

Chipping in through the air for Magoffin County, Garrett Jenkins added three receptions for 31 yards.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Belfry for another Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 23.
