Hornets battle Paintsville in preseason debut

SALYERSVILLE — Making its preseason debut, Magoffin County hosted Paintsville in a high school football scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Magoffin County turned in an impressive performance in the scrimmage, thriving through the air on offense and delivering defensively.

The Hornets and Tigers aren’t scheduled to meet in the 2023 high school football regular season.

“We got some good work in with Paintsville,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “I just want to see our players play hard and give great effort right now. Our players are playing hard and being physical. We will make mistakes, that is part of the game. We want to make fewer mistakes each week, get good film and correct our errors. Our offensive line is ahead of where I thought they would be. We have very little contact in practice, so these scrimmages are where we get to have live contact and 11-on-11 play.”

Magoffin County continues to prepare to compete in the 2023 high school football season. The Hornets’ 2023 schedule is comprised of games versus Montgomery County, Lewis County, Leslie County, Russell, Martin County, Belfry, Powell County, Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County.

Magoffin County (Class 3A, District 8) is scheduled to host Leslie County, Martin County, Belfry, Powell County and Morgan County for home games in the 2023 high school football season.

The Hornets are back on the field after making an appearance in the 2022 KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.

Magoffin County resumed preseason practice at the start of the week.
