Hornets come up short at Floyd Central

EASTERN — Magoffin County rushed for over 390 yards but came up short as Floyd Central held on to win 44-42 in a non-district game on Friday, Aug. 29.

After suffering the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-1.

The Hornets scored first and owned momentum at various times during the non-district game.

Magoffin County and Floyd Central were tied 12-12 at the end of the opening quarter.

Floyd Central entered halftime ahead 24-20. However, Magoffin County continued to challenge the host team throughout the second half.

Floyd Central led 32-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Prior to falling short, Magoffin County had an opportunity to pull even late in the game but was stopped on a two-point conversion attempt.

Quarterback Ketrin Mays led Floyd Central, completing 18 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns. Chipping in on the ground, Mays added one rushing touchdown for the Jaguars.

Wesley Buck emerged as Floyd Central’s leading receiver, finishing with 10 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Buck in Floyd Central’s aerial attack, Damian Cotton delivered eight receptions for 83 yards and touchdown.

Floyd Central rushed 30 times for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Bailey Evans paced Floyd Central on the ground, rushing 15 times for 42 yards. As part of a balanced rushing effort for Floyd Central, Ethan Curry provided two rushing touchdowns.

Defensively for Floyd Central, Elijah Little recorded a team-high 11 tackles.

Magoffin County thrived on the ground, rushing 36 times for 393 yards and six touchdowns. Blake Wireman led Magoffin County, rushing 22 times for 347 yards and the Hornets’ six touchdowns. Wireman scored 40 of Magoffin County’s 42 points.

In addition to Wireman’s leading performance in Magoffin County’s offensive attack, Braxton Montgomery and Mason Peck rushed for positive yardage. Peck also added a two-point conversion for the Hornets.

Pacing Magoffin County through the air, Peck completed four passes for 79 yards.

Jackson Gilliland reeled in a team-high two receptions for the Hornets. Aiding Magoffin County through the air, Wireman and Isaac Yates added one reception apiece. Yates’ reception covered 50 yards.

Defensively for Magoffin County, Grady Cole recorded a game-high 14 tackles. Following Cole, John Fultz delivered 12 tackles for the Hornets. Behind Fultz, Gilliland and Caleb Lovely each tallied eight tackles. Both Cole and Lovely logged a sack for the Hornets.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Perry County Central for its home opener in the 2025 high school football season on Friday, Sept. 5.
