SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County pushed for a win but came up short as Estill County prevailed 13-12 in overtime in a Class 3A, District 8 matchup on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Hornets suffered the setback on Senior Night.
As a result of the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 1-8 overall and finished 0-4 in Class 3A, District 8.
Estill County improved to 5-4 overall and finished 2-2 in Class 3A, District 8 after registering the win.
“We played the game plan right down to the end,” Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett said following the Class 3A, District 8 matchup. “It’s the best defensive performance I’ve had out of a team while coaching, giving up only 74 yards to a good team. Our offense controlled the time of possession. It was a great effort by our team. We got to the end and Estill County was called for targeting on our offensive player. But the officials gave the football to Estill County. We should have had the ball at the 1-yard line for the win. I’ve never seen a targeting call on the defense and the referee gives the ball to the penalized team. That made no sense to me. But that is the way things worked out.”
Jax Niece paced Estill County’s limited offensive attack, rushing 11 times for 34 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively for Estill County, Wyatt Waddie recorded a game-high 20 tackles.
