Hornets, Cougars to resume gridiron series

SALYERSVILLE – After not facing each other in the COVID-shortened 2020 high school football season, longtime rivals Magoffin County and Morgan County are scheduled to meet during the upcoming gridiron campaign.

The Hornets are slated to host the Cougars for a regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 29.

Following a loss to perennial state title contender Belfry in the opening round of the Class 3A Playoffs, Magoffin County exited the 2020 high school football season 3-4. Magoffin County notched wins over Betsy Layne, Martin County and district foe Floyd Central during the 2020 high school football season.

Morgan County exited the 2020 high school football season 1-4.

After opening the 2020 season 0-4, Morgan County defeated visiting Trimble County to break into the win column. The Cougars dropped games to Fairview, Nicholas County, Middlesboro and Leslie County in 2020.

Magoffin County has additional regular season games scheduled versus Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central and Clay County. The Hornets are preparing to host Breathitt County for a season opener on Friday, Aug. 20.

Morgan County has additional regular season games scheduled versus Lewis County, Betsy Layne, Jackson County, Fairview, Paris, Knott County Central, Breathitt County, Middlesboro and Leslie County. The Cougars are preparing to host Lewis County for a season opener on Friday, Aug. 20.

The Hornets pulled away to defeat visiting Morgan County 48-22 in a finale during the 2019 high school football season.
