STANVILLE — Continuing to excel both offensively and defensively, Magoffin County defeated Betsy Layne 14-1 in five innings on Wednesday, April 1.
Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Gabe Burchell, notched its fifth straight win.
The Hornets set the tone early, erupting for eight runs during the top half of the second inning.
Extending its lead, Magoffin County added three runs in each of its next two at bats.
Michael Trusty started on the mound for Magoffin County and earned the win. Trusty pitched three and two-thirds innings and recorded eight strikeouts.
Gavin Arnett replaced Trusty on the mound and pitched in relief for the Hornets. Arnett struck out two Betsy Layne batters.
Trusty and Arnett combined to hold Betsy Layne to one run on two hits.
Jaxon Johnson started on the mound for Betsy Layne and suffered the loss. Following Johnson, Parker Newsome and Sean Jarrell each pitched in relief for the Bobcats. Together, the three Betsy Layne pitchers recorded 10 strikeouts.
Magoffin County scored 14 runs on 12 hits. Trusty (one hit), Arnett (one hit), Isaac Howard (two hits, four RBIs), Mason Peck (two hits, three RBIs), Evan Reed (two hits, two RBIs), Parker Bowling (two hits, one RBI), Aden Montgomery (one hit, one RBI) and Aiden Carty (one hit) each delivered at the plate in Magoffin County’s victory.
Offensively for Betsy Layne, Canyon Slone and Wesley Hamilton each hit safely.
Magoffin County and Betsy Layne aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2026 high school baseball season.
