Hornets defeat Cardinals for district win

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County pulled away to defeat Martin County 13-7 in a 57th District game on Tuesday, April 22.

The Hornets bounced back to win after dropping a game to the Cardinals one day earlier.

Magoffin County outscored Martin County 6-2 in the opening inning and maintained an advantage throughout the rest of the district game.

Michael Trusty started on the mound for Magoffin County and earned the win. Trusty pitched four innings and recorded five strikeouts.

Following Trusty, Hunter Arnett pitched three innings in relief for the Hornets. Arnett struck out two Martin County batters.

Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Gabe Burchell, scored 13 runs on 10 hits. Trusty (one hit), Isaac Howard (three hits, four RBIs), Brayden Bailey (three hits, three RBIs), Chance Risner (one hit, two RBIs), Gavin Arnett (one hit, one RBI), Evan Reed (one hit), Noah Gibson (two RBIs) and Parker Bowling (one RBI) each excelled offensively for Magoffin County in its convincing victory. Providing an extra-base hit, Risner doubled for the Hornets.

Magoffin County and Martin County aren’t scheduled to meet again in the regular season. Following the conclusion of the regular season, both Magoffin County and Magoffin County will compete in the 57th District Baseball Tournament.

Martin County 5, Magoffin County 2: Magoffin County was limited offensively as Martin County prevailed 5-2 in a 57th District game in Inez on Monday, April 21.

Isaac Howard started on the mound for Magoffin County and took the loss. Howard pitched five and two-thirds innings. The Magoffin County starting pitcher recorded two strikeouts.

Following Howard, Hunter Arnett pitched one-third of an inning in relief for the Hornets.

Magoffin County plated two runs on four hits. Evan Reed (one hit, one RBI), Aidan Carty (one hit, one RBI), Mason Peck (one hit) and Gavin Arnett (one hit) accounted for Magoffin County’s offense in the first district game versus Martin County.
