Hornets defeat Warriors 76-68

SALYERSVILLE — Reigning champion Magoffin County topped 15th Region rival East Ridge 76-68 on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Magoffin County improved to 2-4 after notching the win.

The Hornets outscored the Warriors 17-13 in the opening quarter.

However, Magoffin County and East Ridge were tied 39-39 at halftime.

Moving back ahead, Magoffin County outscored East Ridge 25-14 in the third quarter.

The Hornets shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field. Magoffin County made one of seven three-point field goal attempts.

The Hornets shot 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the free throw line.

Walker Russell led Magoffin County with a game-high double-double. Russell poured in 40 points and cleared out 11 rebounds for the Hornets.

Accompanying Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Michael Trusty netted 12 points.

Contributing offensively, Noah Gibson (seven points), Jackson Gilliland (six points), Parker Bowling (five points), Dason Burchett (four points) and Tayte Hall (two points) followed Trusty in Magoffin County’s scoring column.

East Ridge shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the field. The Warriors made four of 17 three-point field goal attempts.

East Ridge shot 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line.

Talon Hopkins led a group of four East Ridge scorers in double figures. Hopkins netted 21 points for the Warriors.

Accompanying Hopkins in double figures for East Ridge, Carter Damron scored 15 points while Peyton Coleman and Gavin Damron netted 13 points apiece.

Chipping in offensively for East Ridge, Gage May (two points), Canaan Ramey (two points) and Brayden Wilson (two points) each made one field goal.

Magoffin County was visiting Johnson Central for a 57th District game at press time on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
