Hornets defeat Warriors in region tournament 

ROBINSON CREEK — Reigning champion Magoffin County defeated East Ridge 73-63 in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Shelby Valley on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The Hornets flourished offensively.

Magoffin County shot 56.2 percent (27-of-48) from the field. The Hornets shot 31.6 percent (six-of-19) from three-point range.

Magoffin County shot 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

The Hornets controlled the backboards, outrebounding the Warriors 33-21.

Walker Russell led Magoffin County to the win, scoring a game-high 23 points for the Hornets. Russell connected on each of his nine free throw attempts.

Accompanying Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Michael Trusty scored 15 points and Parker Bowling netted 13 points.

Eight different players supplied scoring for the Hornets. Tayte Hall (eight points), Dason Burchett (seven points), Jackson Gilliland (four points) Evan Reed (two points) and Caleb Lovely (one point) were Magoffin County’s additional scorers.

Trusty paced Magoffin County inside, securing a game-high eight rebounds for the Hornets.

East Ridge shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field. The Warriors shot 31.6 percent (six-of-19) from three-point range.

East Ridge shot 58.3 percent (seven-of-12) from the free throw line.

Canaan Ramey (15 points), Peyton Coleman (14 points) and Talon Hopkins (13 points) each reached double figures in scoring for East Ridge during the region tournament game.

Finishing in single digits, Carter Damron (nine points), Brayden Wilson (seven points) and Keegan Wallace (five points) were the other scorers for the Warriors.
