LICK CREEK — Magoffin County defeated East Ridge 77-61 during the initial round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 26.
The Hornets won for the third time in four games. The win allowed Magoffin County to advance in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.
Magoffin County shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field. The Hornets shot 35.0 percent (seven-of-20) from three-point range.
Magoffin County shot 78.3 percent (18-of-23) from the free throw line.
The Hornets excelled inside, outrebounding the Warriors 33-21.
Walker Russell led Magoffin County to the win. Russell recorded a game-high double-double for Magoffin County, scoring 26 points and claiming 14 rebounds.
Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County, Caleb Lovely scored nine points while Jackson Gilliland and Michael Trusty netted eight points apiece.
Nine different players provided scoring for the Hornets. Contributing to the win, Maycen Allen (seven points), Evan Reed (six points), Parker Bowling (six points), Dason Burchett (four points) and Noah Gibson (three points) provided the rest of Magoffin County’s scoring in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament game.
East Ridge, which was eliminated from the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament, shot 42.0 percent (21-of-50) from the field.
The Warriors shot 35.0 percent (seven-of-20) from three-point range.
East Ridge shot 60.0 percent (12-of-20) from the free throw line.
Canaan Ramey (21 points), Jordan Belcher (16 points) and Gavin Damron (12 points, 10 rebounds) each reached double figures for East Ridge in the postseason matchup.
The other scorers for East Ridge were Kaden McCoy (six points), Ayden Mullins (four points) and Ian Ramy (two points).
Magoffin County defeated East Ridge for the second time in less than three weeks.
Following the win, Magoffin County moved on to meet Pike County Central in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.
