SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County couldn’t battle back from behind as Letcher County Central won 71-28 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 10.
Following the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in Class 3A, District 8.
Letcher County Central improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Class 3A, District 8 after registering the win.
The Cougars excelled on the ground, rushing 32 times for 376 yards and seven touchdowns. Garrett Howard paced Letcher County Central, rushing 15 times for 269 yards and four touchdowns.
Following Howard in Letcher County Central’s rushing attack, Brett Sturgill took 13 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns.
Letcher County Central produced on the ground and through the air. Making an impact through the air in Letcher County Central’s winning effort, quarterback Gunner Holbrook completed nine passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Sturgill and Mason Stephens each hauled in one touchdown pass reception for the Cougars.
Defensively, Letcher County Central managed to record three interceptions. Providing a defensive score in Letcher County Central’s win, Thayden Brown returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown.
Blake Wireman continued to pace Magoffin County offensively, rushing 35 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Wireman remains one of the top rushers in Class 3A.
Through the air for Magoffin County, Mason Peck completed nine passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
Dason Burchett was Peck’s top target, hauling in seven receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Pike County Central for a non-district game on Friday, Oct. 17.
