SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County amassed over 290 yards of total offense, but it wasn’t enough as Perry County Central pulled away to win 39-8 on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The Hornets hosted the Commodores for a home opener.
Perry County Central rushed 27 times for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Kaiden Gibson led the Commodores, rushing 14 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Parker Maggard paced Perry County Central through the air, completing six passes for 91 yards and one touchdown.
Reaching the endzone via the air for Perry County Central, Josh Miller was on the receiving end of Maggard’s touchdown pass.
Perry County Central thrived defensively in the secondary, delivering five interceptions. Jeryn Fugate and Nolan Rice each recorded two interceptions for the Commodores. Another player, Bryce Eldridge, added one interception for Perry County Central.
Supplying a score from the defensive side, Fugate returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown.
Three different Magoffin County players combined to complete 10 passes for 134 yards and one touchdown. Jackson Gilliland completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Dason Burchett for the Hornets.
Contributing through the air in Magoffin County’s home opener, Blake Wireman and Mason Peck combined to complete nine passes for 74 yards.
Burchett and Jairen Howard each hauled in four receptions for the Hornets.
Magoffin County rushed 33 times for 157 yards. Wireman continued to lead Magoffin County on the ground, rushing 19 times for 108 yards.
In addition to Wireman, Burchett, Peck and Braxton Montgomery provided positive rushing yardage for the Hornets.
Caleb Lovely led Magoffin County defensively, recording 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles for losses and 2.5 sacks. In another strong defensive performance for Magoffin County, John Fultz tallied 9 tackles, 1.5 tackles for losses and 1.5 sacks.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host West Carter for its next game on Friday, Sept. 12.
