SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County was limited offensively as Martin County pulled away to win 76-58 in the semifinals of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Johnson Central High School’s Paul R. Setser Eagle Field House on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The loss eliminated Magoffin County from the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Magoffin County exited the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season 12-16.
With the win, Martin County advanced to the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament championship game.
Thriving offensively, Martin County shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field. The Cardinals shot 27.8 percent (five-of-18) from three-point range.
Martin County shot 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the free throw line.
Brady Dingess scored 30 points to lead Martin County to the win. Prior to the start of the postseason, Dingess was named the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year.
Joining Dingess in double figures for the Cardinals, Luke Hale scored 17 points.
Narrowly missing double figures for the Cardinals, Peyton Davis and Jordan Dalton netted nine points apiece.
Finishing one shot short of reaching double figures for Martin County, Jacob Sturgell added eight points.
Rounding out Martin County’s individual scoring, Blake Maynard and Braydun Ferris chipped in two points and one point, respectively.
Magoffin County shot 24.7 percent (19-of-77) from the field in the season-ending setback. The Hornets drained six of 22 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 27.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Magoffin County managed to shoot 82.4 percent (14-of-27) from the free throw line.
Aden Barnett recorded a double-double to lead the Hornets, scoring 30 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Accompanying Barnett in double figures for the Hornets, Walker Russell netted 13 points.
Six players accounted for Magoffin County’s scoring in the season-ending setback. The additional scorers for
Magoffin County were Spencer Howard (six points), Zane Whitaker (four points), Ethan Salyer (three points) and Brennan Hansen (two points).
