SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County hosted Class 5A, District 8 member Harlan County for its first scrimmage in the 2024 high school football preseason on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Both Magoffin County and Harlan County opened preseason practice in July, following the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period. The Hornets and Black Bears aren’t scheduled to meet in the 2024 high school football regular season.
“We appreciate Coach (Jacob) Saylor for bringing his team over from Harlan County,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “We were able to get in some quality physical work, which we needed. We just tell the players to do their jobs, give great effort, be physical and have fun. You can accomplish a lot on the football field if you do those things. Our players work hard. All of our players received a position grade from the scrimmage, and we looked at film to see what we can improve. Just like in the classroom, teach, practice, perform, evaluate, reteach, make corrections and repeat the cycle. It takes great preparation.”
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Paintsville for its final scrimmage in the 2024 high school football preseason on Friday, Aug. 16.
