SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County hosted Shelby Valley for its first scrimmage in the 2022 high school football preseason on Saturday, Aug. 6.
Fans turned out to support Class 3A, District 8 member Magoffin County in the preseason matchup versus Shelby Valley.
The Hornets opened preseason practice in July, following the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period.
Head coach John DeRossett is preparing to guide Magoffin County in the 2022 high school football season.
“We ran good on defense and made some tackles,” DeRossett commented, following the Hornets’ initial scrimmage. “Offensively, we have only practiced two or three times, so it was a little shaky. We need to learn that games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. We will keep working. We have great kids and a good staff. We will continue to work on blocking, tackling, ball security, defeating blocks, running to the football and being physical. We have quite a way to go, but with work and a great attitude, lots of things are possible. We are continuing to lift and work on our conditioning because you can’t do much if you can’t play four quarters.”
Magoffin County is scheduled to meet Harlan County at Shelby Valley in its second scrimmage in the 2022 high school football preseason on Saturday, Aug. 13. The Hornets and Black Bears will match up in the opening game of the Black & Blue Bowl.
