SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County managed to knock off 15th Region frontrunner Martin County 70-58 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Friday, Feb. 3.
Productive Magoffin County claimed its third straight win, improving to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in the 57th District.
Martin County dropped to 19-4 overall and 4-1 in the 57th District following the loss.
The Hornets used a balanced offensive effort to pull away to defeat Martin County.
Magoffin County received scoring from five different players, four of whom reached double figures.
Aden Barnett and Zane Whitaker scored 19 points apiece to lead Magoffin County to the district win. Both Barnett and Whitaker recorded a double-double for the Hornets.
Leading Magoffin County inside, Barnett claimed 13 rebounds. Providing another double-double for the Hornets, Whitaker claimed 10 rebounds.
Following two of his teammates in scoring for the Hornets, Grayson Whitaker netted 15 points. Pacing Magoffin County beyond the arc, Whitaker made three of 12 three-point field goal attempts.
Turning in another solid performance for the Hornets, Ben Lafferty added 11 points.
Aiding Magoffin County in the district win, Ethan Salyer contributed six points.
Limited offensively, Martin County shot 31.9 percent (23-of-72) from the field. The Cardinals connected on nine-of-29 three-point field goal attempts.
The 15th Region All “A” Classic champion, Martin County made three of five free throw attempts in the district game.
Luke Hale scored 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Cardinals.
Joining Hale in double figures for Martin County, Brayden McKenzie netted 16 points.
Nearly recording a double-double for Martin County, Dray Duff delivered nine points and nine rebounds.
Chipping in offensively for the Cardinals, Jacob Sturgell contributed six points and Blake Maynard added two points.
Both Magoffin County and Martin County will compete in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament later in the month.
