Hornets knock off Shelby Valley, 72-67

ROBINSON CREEK – Turning in a solid performance, visiting Magoffin County knocked off former state champion Shelby Valley 72-67 in a boys’ high school basketball game on Monday, Jan. 25.

ROBINSON CREEK – Turning in a solid performance, visiting Magoffin County knocked off former state champion Shelby Valley 72-67 in a boys’ high school basketball game on Monday, Jan. 25.

Magoffin County and Shelby Valley are longtime 15th Region boys’ basketball rivals.

After claiming the win, Magoffin County evened its record to 3-3.

Following the loss, Shelby Valley dropped to 6-3.

Magoffin County shot 52.2 percent (24-of-46) from the field. The Hornets were 6-of-12 from 3-point range, shooting 50 percent beyond the arc.

Magoffin County shot 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free throw line.

Thriving inside, Magoffin County outrebounded Shelby Valley 31-22.

Aden Barnett led Magoffin County to the win. Leading all players in scoring and rebounding, Barnett netted 24 points and hauled down nine rebounds.

Magoffin County featured three scorers in double figures.

Accompanying Barnett in double figures for the Hornets, Grayson Whitaker added 14 points and Isaiah Salyer tallied 13 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for the Hornets, Ethan Prewitt posted nine points.

Ben Lafferty (five points), Patrick Damron (four points) and Kaden Bowling (three points) followed, combining to round out the Hornets’ individual scoring.

Shelby Valley shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field. The Wildcats were 9-of-25 (36 percent) from 3-point range.

Kaden Robinson paced Shelby Valley, scoring 19 points for the Wildcats.

Shelby Valley featured four scorers in double figures. Following Robinson, Chaz Brown netted 16 points, Keian Worrix contributed 15 points and Zach Johnson added 10 points.

Russ Osborne and Anthony Pallotta rounded out Shelby Valley’s individual scoring, chipping in five points and two points, respectively.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Shelby Valley on Monday, Feb. 8.
