Hornets lose district game to Tigers

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County couldn’t battle back from behind as Paintsville pulled away to win 71-41 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Thursday, Jan. 30.

Paintsville shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field. The Tigers made two of 14 three-point field goal attempts.

Paintsville shot 81.2 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.

The Tigers thrived inside. Paintsville controlled the backboards, doubling up Magoffin County 32-16 in the rebounding column.

Ethan Cole led Paintsville to the win, pouring in a game-high 29 points. Cole made 12 of 15 two-point field goal attempts.

Joining Cole in double figures for the Tigers, Brock Woods scored 14 points and Anderson Lauffer netted 10 points.

Nine different platers provided scoring for the Tigers. Parker Helton (five points), Michael Stafford (three points), Jonathan Hansford (three points), Jase Kinner (three points), Maycen Allen (two points) and Carter Salisbury (two points) each finished in single digits in Paintsville’s scoring column.

Active inside for Paintsville, Kinner pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Magoffin County shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field. The Hornets managed to shoot 45.5 percent from beyond the arc, connecting on five of 11 three-point field goal attempts.

Magoffin County shot 54.5 percent (six-of-11) from the free throw line.

Walker Russell scored a team-high 20 points for the Hornets. Russell was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures.

Michael Trusty (five points), Tayte Hall (five points), Evan Reed (three points), Noah Gibson (three points), Blake Wireman (three points) and Jackson Gilliland (two points) followed Walker in Magoffin County’s scoring column.
