Hornets lose to Panthers

PIKEVILLE — Magoffin County continued to show improvement during a game versus the reigning 15th Region champion at the start of the week.

But Pikeville turned back Magoffin County, shutting out the Hornets 8-0 on Monday, May 5.

The Panthers set the tone early, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the opening inning.

Jackson Hall, Isaac Duty and Gage Burgett combined to pitch a two-hit shutout for the Panthers. Hall started on the mound for Pikeville and earned the win. The Pikeville starting pitcher worked three innings and posted three strikeouts. Working out of a relief role for the Panthers, Duty pitched three innings and recorded six strikeouts. Burchett, another talented pitcher for Pikeville, fanned three Magoffin County batters in his lone inning on the mound.

Michael Trusty started on the mound for Magoffin County and suffered the loss. Trusty pitched four innings and recorded six strikeouts.

Chipping in on the mound, Evan Reed and Parker Bowling each pitched one inning in relief for the Hornets.

Pikeville scored eight runs on seven hits. Duty (one hit, two RBIs), Burgett (one hit, one RBI), Bradyn Hall (one hit, one RBI), Jackson Hall (one hit, one RBI), Isaiah Stanley (one hit, one RBI), Grant Tomlinson (one hit, one RBI) and Zach McCoy (one hit) each contributed to Pikeville’s offensive effort.

Offensively for Magoffin County, Reed and Isaac Howard each singled.
