SALYERSVILLE – Returning to the win column, Magoffin County outlasted Letcher County Central 66-63 in a boys’ high school basketball game on Thursday, Dec. 16.
The Hornets won following back-to-back losses to 57th District rival Martin County and Lawrence County.
After notching the win over Letcher County Central, an opponent from the neighboring 14th Region, Magoffin County evened its record to 3-3.
The Hornets and Cougars swapped leads during the non-district matchup. However, Magoffin County finished strong to notch the win.
Scott Castle-coached Magoffin County featured three scorers in double figures.
Leading Magoffin County to the win, Ben Lafferty scored 23 points. Along with Lafferty reaching double figures for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett scored 21 points and Zane Whitaker added 12 points.
Nearly recording a double-double for the Hornets, Barnett pulled down nine rebounds.
Chipping in offensively as part of Magoffin County’s winning effort, Walker Russell (five points), Ethan Salyer (three points) and Grayson Whitaker (two points) accounted for the rest of the Hornets’ individual scoring.
Magoffin County and Letcher County Central aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season.
