STANTON — Magoffin County outlasted perennial title contender Powell County 4-3 on Monday, March 30.
Under the direction of Coach Gabe Burchell, Magoffin County registered its fourth straight win. The win allowed Magoffin County to improve to 4-2.
Magoffin County scored the game-winning run in the top half of the sixth inning.
Isaac Howard pitched a complete game for Magoffin County and earned the win on the mound. Howard held Powell County to three runs on five hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Dylan Trent started on the mound for 2025 14th Region runner-up Powell County and took the loss. Trent pitched six innings and tallied seven strikeouts.
Closing out the game on the mound for Powell County, Layne Rogers replaced Trent and pitched the final inning in relief. Rogers fanned two Magoffin County batters.
Magoffin County scored four runs on 10 hits. Michael Trusty and Brayden Carroll each provided two hits for the Hornets. Trusty doubled and drove in one run while Aiden Carty, who provided two RBIs, homered. Howard, Carty, Mason Peck, Aden Montgomery, Gavin Arnett and Evan Reed each provided one hit for the Hornets.
Rogers (two hits), Drew Miller (one hit), Ethan Wireman (one hit), Jackson Tipton (one hit) and Lacy Dicken (two RBIs) accounted for Powell County’s offense. Providing the only extra-base hit for Powell County, Rogers doubled.
The Hornets and Pirates aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2026 high school baseball season.
