SALYERSVILLE — Working its way back into the win column, Magoffin County pulled away to defeat Estill County 65-55 on Friday, Jan 23.
The win allowed Magoffin County to halt a losing skid at 10 games. Following the win, Magoffin County improved to 3-16.
Magoffin County dealt Estill County its third straight loss.
The Hornets and Engineers are familiar foes from bordering regions.
Magoffin County shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field in its win. The Hornets connected on two of 15 three-point field goal attempts.
Magoffin County shot 68.0 percent (17-of-25) from the free throw line.
Caleb Lovely led a balanced offensive effort for Magoffin County, scoring 17 points.
Finishing directly behind Lovely in Magoffin County’s scoring column, Walker Russell netted 16 points.
Accompanying Lovely and Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Michael Trusty scored 11 points.
Russell and Trusty each recorded a double-double, clearing out 11 rebounds apiece.
Eight different players entered Magoffin County’s scoring column. The additional scorers for Magoffin County were Dason Burchett (seven points), Evan Reed (six points), Parker Bowling (four points), Noah Gibson (two points) and Maycen Allen (two points).
Magoffin County registered the win after dropping a game to Estill County in December. Estill County defeated Magoffin County 76-64 in an early-season game played on Dec. 9, 2025.
The Hornets and Engineers aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2025-26 boys’ high school basketball season.
