SALYERSVILLE — Delivering in front of a supportive home crowd, Magoffin County pulled away to defeat West Carter 66-50 on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
After registering the win, reigning 15th Region boys’ basketball champion Magoffin County improved to 4-8.
Magoffin County carried a lead out of each quarter, edging West Carter 11-10 in the opening period.
Extending its lead, Magoffin County entered halftime ahead 32-23.
Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, led 45-34 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
The Hornets shot 59.0 percent (23-of-39) from the field. Magoffin County connected on 21 of 29 shots taken inside the arc.
The Hornets made two of 10 three-point field goal attempts.
Excelling in a key area, Magoffin County shot 94.7 percent (18-of-19) from the free throw line.
Walker Russell poured in a game-high 29 points for the Hornets. Russell made each of his nine free throw attempts.
Joining Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Parker Bowling scored 13 points and Tayte Hall netted 12 points.
Along with the three scorers in double figures for Magoffin County, Dason Burchett (eight points), Jackson Gilliland (two points) and Caleb Lovely (two points) produced offensively.
Defensively, Magoffin County limited West Carter throughout the game.
West Carter shot 27.1 percent (16-of-59) from the field. The Comets made one of 14 three-point field goal attempts.
West Carter shot 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the free throw line.
Brody Boggs paced West Carter, scoring a team-high 14 points for the Comets.
Joining Boggs in double figures for West Carter, Jacob Waddell netted 12 points.
The other scorers for West Carter were Wade Lawson (eight points), Nathaniel Hale (eight points), Ethan Bledsoe (four points), Nick Parker (two points) and Peyton Nichols (two points)
