PRESTONSBURG – Opening the 2021 high school football season with a win, Magoffin County defeated Prestonsburg 34-6 at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium on Friday, Aug. 27.
Magoffin County scored first and never trailed. The game was tied once at 6-6 but Magoffin County gradually pulled away to win convincingly.
Senior quarterback Lucas Litteral excelled for Magoffin County in the season opener. Litteral completed 10 of 19 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. He threw one interception.
Leading the Hornets on the ground, Litteral rushed six times for 70 yards and one touchdown.
Sophomore Aden Barnett led the Hornets in receiving. Barnett hauled in two receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown.
Sophomore Grayson Whitaker followed Barnett in the Hornets’ aerial attack, reeling in four receptions for 81 yards.
Contributing to Magoffin County’s potent passing game, Russell Cruz reeled in a 29-yard touchdown pass reception.
The Hornets rushed 22 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the opener.
Barnett and Whitaker added one rushing touchdown apiece for Magoffin County.
Kajun Williams led Magoffin County’s defensive effort, recording 14 tackles for the Hornets.
Finishing directly behind Williams in the key defensive category, Gavin Phipps and Curtis Jenkins registered 13 tackles apiece for Magoffin County in the impressive victory.
Contributing defensively for the Hornets in the opener, Colin Litteral recorded one interception.
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Knott County Central for its next game on Friday, Sept. 3.
