Hornets’ three-team scrimmage to include Bath County, East Carter

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is scheduled to host Bath County and East Carter for a three-team high school football scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 5.

Coach John DeRossett is poised to guide the Hornets on the gridiron. DeRossett replaced Chris Gamble as the Hornets’ head coach in January. Following a successful tenure as head coach, Gamble stepped away from the Magoffin County gridiron program at the conclusion of the 2021 high school football season.

Magoffin County concluded the 2021 season 6-4. The Hornets lost to district rival Belfry in the first round of the Class 3A State Playoffs. Magoffin County competes with Belfry, Floyd Central, Lawrence County and Pike County Central in Class 3A, District 8. Belfry is the reigning Class 3A champion.

Bath County compiled a 6-6 record in 2021. The Wildcats lost to West Carter in the opening round of the Class 2A Playoffs. Bath County competes with West Carter, Shelby Valley, Prestonsburg, Martin County and East Ridge in Class 2A, District 8.

One of the state’s most improved high school football teams, East Carter exited the 2021 season 11-4. The Raiders’ latest campaign ended following a loss to Belfry in the Class 3A State Semifinals. East Carter competes with Ashland, Greenup County and Russell in Class 3A, District 7.

Magoffin County started an offseason program in January. The Hornets will open preseason practice in July.
