SALYERSVILLE — Reigning 15th Region champion Magoffin County took the court for three games during the opening week of the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season.
Magoffin County compiled a 1-2 record in the opening week of the 2024-25 prep hoops campaign.
Betsy Layne defeated host Magoffin County 88-55 in a season opener on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
But the Hornets bounced back to win on a neutral court. Magoffin County defeated Letcher County Central 56-50 in the DJ Begley Classic at Hazard on Friday, Dec. 6.
Defending 15th Region champion Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, ventured to neighboring Floyd County for its third game in the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season. Floyd Central, competing as South Floyd in a throwback game at Raider Arena in Hi Hat, defeated the Hornets 70-60 on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Following the loss to Floyd Central, Magoffin County slipped to 1-2.
Junior guard Walker Russell is the lone returning starter for the Hornets. After reaching the quarterfinals of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited the 2023-24 season 22-14.
