Hornets to host Russell for Homecoming

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host Russell for Homecoming on Friday, Sept. 13.

“We’ve got another big-time opponent this week in Russell,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “It is Homecoming week at school, and they have the spirit days going strong. We have outstanding young people in Magoffin County.”

The Hornets and Red Devils met during the 2023 high school football season. Russell defeated Magoffin County 53-14 on Sept. 8, 2023.

The Hornets and Red Devils are Class 3A rivals.

Both Magoffin County and Russell are 1-2.

Magoffin County notched a shutout win over Lewis County earlier in the season. The Hornets have dropped games to Montgomery County and Leslie County.

Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8.

Russell defeated South Point (Ohio) in its last outing. The Red Devils have suffered losses to Mason County and Greenup County.

Russell, under the direction of Coach TJ Maynard, competes in Class 3A, District 6.

Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Russell, Martin County, Belfry, Powell County, Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County.

Russell has regular season games remaining versus Magoffin County, Ashland, Fleming County, West Carter, Lewis County, Bath County and East Carter.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Russell game is set for 7:30 p.m.
