SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host West Carter for its second home game in the 2025 high school football season on Friday, Sept. 12.
The Hornets and Comets did not meet during the 2024 high school football season. Magoffin County and West Carter haven’t met for a matchup on the gridiron since 2016. The Hornets and Comets played four times from 2011-2016, meeting for regular season games. West Carter won three of the four games. However, Magoffin County will be looking to register a win over West Carter in the two teams’ latest meeting.
The Hornets and Comets will meet for a non-district game. During the offseason, Magoffin County added non-district opponent West Carter to its 2025 schedule.
Magoffin County (Class 3A, District 8) is 1-2. The Hornets outlasted Rowan County in a season opener but have dropped back-to-back games to Floyd Central and Perry County Central. Class 4A, District 8 member Perry County Central defeated Magoffin County 39-8 on Saturday, Sept. 6.
West Carter (Class 2A, District 6).is 2-1. The Comets defeated Lewis County and Fairview for back-to-back wins before suffering a shutout loss to Russell. Turning in a dominant performance, Russell blanked West Carter 35-0.
Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus West Carter, Winfield (W.Va.), Estill County, Powell County, Letcher County Central, Pike County Central and Lawrence County. West Carter, Winfield and Pike County Central are the non-district opponents remaining on Magoffin County’s schedule.
West Carter has regular season games remaining versus Magoffin County, East Carter, Paintsville, Jackson County, Breathitt County, Morgan County and Rowan County.
Kickoff for the Magoffin County-West Carter game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
