Hornets to kick off 2025 season at Rowan County

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to visit Rowan County for its opening game in the 2025 high school football season on Friday, Aug. 22.

Rowan County is among the new opponents on Magoffin County’s 2025 schedule.

The Hornets and Vikings did not meet during the 2024 high school football season but have faced off on the gridiron in previous years. Magoffin County and Rowan County have met five times since 1998. Rowan County has notched three straight wins over the Hornets. Determined Rowan County held on to edge Magoffin County 23-22 in the two teams’ last meeting on Oct. 18, 2022.

The Hornets and Vikings are non-district rivals.

Both Magoffin County and Rowan County exited the 2024 high school football season 2-8. Magoffin County (Class 3A, District 8) won its 2024 season finale, defeating Morgan County 41-18.

Rowan County (Class 4A, District 6) dropped its 2024 season finale as West Carter held on to win 26-21.

Earlier in the preseason, Magoffin County hosted Fleming County and Montgomery County for scrimmages.

Rowan County met Bourbon County, Bracken County and Russell in preseason games. The Vikings hosted Bourbon County and Bracken County for a three-team scrimmage. Then, Rowan County hosted Russell in the EKC Grid.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Rowan County football game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
