SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County will return to the gridiron on Thursday, July 10.

The Hornets will open preseason practice following the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period, which spans from June 25-July 9.

Magoffin County has excelled throughout the offseason. John DeRossett, the head coach of Magoffin County, witnessed his team make strides throughout the winter and spring.

“We will take a few weeks off and hit the ground running at 10 a.m. on July 10,” said DeRossett. “We’ve got some outstanding young men in our football program here at Magoffin County. We have two young men at the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program right now.”

In August, Magoffin County will host two scrimmages before visiting Rowan County for a season opener.

Magoffin County, a high school football program on the rise, found scheduling games for the 2025 high school football season to be challenging.

“We’ve got our schedule set, but were lucky to get 10 games,” confided DeRossett. “It’s funny how schools from 15 to 20 miles away won’t play. But we’ve got a schedule. With Letcher County Central moving into our district, we need to take every opportunity to get better each day in practice.”
