SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to visit Estill County for its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept. 26.
The Hornets and Engineers are longtime rivals.
Magoffin County and Estill County battled during the 2024 high school football season. Estill County held on to edge Magoffin County 13-12 in overtime in the two teams’ last meeting Oct. 25, 2024. But Magoffin County doubled up Estill County 38-19 during the previous season on Oct. 20, 2023.
Magoffin County is 2-3. The Hornets have notched wins over Rowan County and West Carter.
Floyd Central, Perry County Central and Winfield (W.Va.) have each defeated the Hornets.
Estill County is 3-2. The Engineers have registered wins over Western Hills, Bath County and Montgomery County.
Both Lincoln County and Breathitt County have defeated the Engineers.
Magoffin County, Estill County, Lawrence County, Letcher County Central and Powell County comprise Class 3A, District 8. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top four teams from District 8 will advance to the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.
Magoffin County’s remaining regular season schedule is comprised of games versus Estill County, Powell County, Letcher County Central, Pike County Central and Lawrence County.
Pike County Central is the lone non-district opponent left on Magoffin County’s regular season schedule. Following its matchup versus Estill County, Magoffin County is due to host Powell County and Letcher County Central for back-to-back Class 3A, District 8 games.
The Magoffin County-Estill County game is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
