Hornets to visit Martin County for fifth game

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host visit Martin County for its fifth game in the 2024 high school football season.

The Hornets and Cardinals are longtime rivals. Magoffin County and Martin County met during the 2023 high school football season. The Hornets outlasted the Cardinals 16-14 in Salyersville on Sept. 15, 2023.

Magoffin County and Martin County will meet for a non-district game.

The Hornets are 1-3. Magoffin County has notched a win over Lewis County. Currently on a two-game losing skid, Magoffin County has suffered losses to Montgomery County, Leslie County and Russell.

Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach John DeRossett, competes in Class 3A, District 8.

The Cardinals are 3-1. Martin County has posted wins over Pike County Central, Shelby Valley and Paintsville. Currently on a three-game winning streak, Martin County dropped its season opener to much-improved Hazard.

Martin County, under the guidance of head coach Josh Muncy, competes in Class 2A, District 7.

Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Martin County, Belfry, Powell County, Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County.

Martin County has regular season games remaining versus Magoffin County, Perry County Central, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Floyd Central and East Carter.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Martin County game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
