Lady Hornets come up short in season opener versus Morgan County

SALYERSVILLE — Visiting Morgan County held on to defeat Magoffin County 44-40 on Thursday, Dec. 4.

The Lady Hornets hosted Morgan County for a season opener.

Morgan County connected on 15 field goals, five of which were three-pointers. The Lay Cougars made nine of 18 free throw attempts.

Lily Litteral paced Morgan County, scoring 18 points for the Lady Cougars.

Delivering a double-double for Morgan County, Emma Clinger scored 12 points and hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.

The other scorers for Morgan County were Bella Smith (six points), Sara Jenkins (six points), Gracie Hampton (one point) and KK Halsey (one point).

Magoffin County made 12 field goals, five of which were three-pointers. The Lady Hornets connected on 11 of 20 free throw attempts.

Abby Barnett led Magoffin County in the season opener. Nearly recording a double-double, Barnett scored a game-high 19 points and claimed nine rebounds for the Lady Hornets. Barnett was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column.

In addition to Barnett, Bella Trusty (seven points), Macy Williams (five points), Jaylee Reed (five points), Emily Sluss (three points) and Jerrica Reed (one point) produced offensively for the Lady Hornets.

Magoffin County and Morgan County aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2025-26 girls’ high school basketball season.
