SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County won its opening game in the 2026 high school softball season convincingly, defeating Prestonsburg 13-3 in six innings on Monday, March 23.
The Lady Hornets controlled the season opener.
Magoffin County scored first and never trailed. The Lady Hornets led 5-0 before Prestonsburg crossed home plate to score for the first time during the top half of the fifth inning.
Ava Hensley started in the circle for Magoffin County and earned the win. Hensley pitched three scoreless innings, recording four strikeouts.
Addison Schlick replaced Hensley in the circle for Magoffin County and pitched two innings in relief. Schlick logged two strikeouts.
Each team sent two pitchers out to pitch during the matchup.
Addison Wright and Ava Vanover split time pitching for visiting Prestonsburg.
Magoffin County scored 13 runs on 18 hits. Kelsey Slone (four hits, three RBIs), Maci Minix (four hits, two RBIs), Jaycie Wells (four hits, one RBI), Kiley Lemaster (two hits, four RBIs), Bella Trusty (two hits), Abby Barnett (one hit), Baylee Hatfield (one hit) and Macy Williams (one RBI) each contributed during multiple plate appearances for the Lady Hornets. Both Wells and Lemaster doubled.
Prestonsburg pushed across three runs on five hits. Candace Allen (two hits), Alivia Williams (one hit, two RBIs), Kendra Runyon (one hit, one RBI) and Johnna Ward (one hit) each contributed offensively for the Lady Blackcats.
Magoffin County and Prestonsburg aren’t slated to meet again in the 2026 high school softball season.
