Lady Hornets show improvement

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County was one of the 15th Region’s most improved teams in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season.

The Lady Hornets reached double digit wins in February. Under the direction of Coach Justin Williams, Magoffin County compiled a 10-19 record in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season. Magoffin County suffered a season-ending loss to Martin County in the semifinals of the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

The Lady Hornets showed much improvement during the second half of the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball regular season. After January 15, Magoffin County put together an 8-6 record. Magoffin County won its last six regular season games after finishing the previous campaign 7-24 overall.

Much-improved Magoffin County made a turnaround in the 2022-23 season after losing 13 of its first 15 games.

Several players stepped up for Magoffin County throughout the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season. Senior center Angel Mullis led Magoffin County in both scoring and rebounding. Mullis averaged 12.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Lady Hornets.

Following Mullis, junior guard Karah Lafferty averaged 11.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for 57th District member Magoffin County.

Senior guard Kennedy Williams, who averaged 5.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, ranked as Magoffin County’s third-leading scorer.

Instrumental in the local high school hoops team’s success, Abby Barnett averaged 4.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

The additional key contributors for Magoffin County included Jaylee Reed, Macy Williams, Emily Sluss, Abigail Bradley, Maddie Salyer and Bella Trusty.

Magoffin County will lose Mullis and Kennedy Williams to graduation. However, Magoffin County is expected to continue to win more often in the 2023-24 girls’ high school basketball season, which will tip off in late-November.
