Magoffin County falls to Perry County Central

EASTERN — Magoffin County couldn’t battle back from behind as Perry County Central prevailed 51-38 in the quarterfinals of the 2A, Section 8 Girls’ Basketball Tournament at J.E. Campbell Arena on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The loss eliminated Magoffin County from the 2A, Section 8 Girls’ Basketball Tournament. Magoffin County exited the 2A, Section 8 Girls’ Basketball Tournament 4-9.

Perry County Central shot 37.0 percent (20-of-54) from the field in its winning effort. The Lady Commodores shot 26.3 percent (five-of-19) from three-point range.

Perry County Central shot 66.7 percent (six-of-nine) from the free throw line.

Brooklyn Cornett led a diverse Perry County Central offensive effort, scoring a team-high 12 points for the Lady Commodores.

Barely missing double figures for Perry County Central, Emily Noble and Jacklynn Amis netted nine points apiece.

Nine different players entered Perry County Central’s scoring column. The other scorers for Perry County Central were Taylor Couch (six points), Shyanne Couch (five points), Hayden Young (four points), Ava Cornett (two points), Mikayla Shepherd (two points) and Havyn Hoskins (two points).

Magoffin County shot 41.2 percent (14-of-34) from the field. The Lady Hornets made two of eight three-point field goal attempts.

Magoffin County shot 57.1 percent (eight-of-14) from the free throw line.

Bella Trusty and Abby Barnett scored 13 points apiece for Magoffin County, sharing game-high scoring honors.

Nearly recording a double-double for Magoffin County, Barnett cleared out nine rebounds.

Chipping in offensively, Emily Sluss (six points), Abigail Bradley (four points) and Macy Williams (two points) were Magoffin County’s additional scorers.

Magoffin County and Perry County Central aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2024-25 girls’ high school basketball season.
