Magoffin County suffers season-ending loss to Phelps

PHELPS — Magoffin County suffered a season-ending loss as host Phelps prevailed 70-59 in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 1.

Following the loss, Magoffin County exited the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season 7-22.

Reigning 15th Region boys’ basketball champion Magoffin County shot 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the field. Productive beyond the arc, Magoffin County shot 37.5 percent (nine-of-24) from three-point range.

Magoffin County shot 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line.

Walker Russell led a balanced attack for Magoffin County, scoring 17 points and claiming six rebounds. Russell paced a trio of Magoffin County scorers in double figures.

Joining Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Dason Burchett scored 15 points and Tayte Hall netted 11 points.

Behind Hall in Magoffin County’s scoring column, Parker Bowling posted eight points, Jackson Gilliland contributed six points and Caleb Lovely added two points.
