Man arrested after showing up at cop’s home

SALYERSVILLE – A Salyersville man is in jail after showing up at a local police officer’s home and carrying a golf club.

According to the arrest citation, on August 3 at approximately 9:20 p.m., Salyersville Police Department Officer Mike Nickels was contacted by his wife, telling him that a male subject was around their house. When Nickels arrived, he couldn’t see anyone, so he went inside to check on his 13-year-old daughter.

While Nickels was inside his home, Sonny Keeton, 37, of Middle Fork, Salyersville, allegedly came onto the property with a golf club and approached the home.

Nickels reported in the citation that he noticed Keeton was looking toward the windows of the house, at which time his daughter screamed, and Nickels went outside.

“I went outside and told subject to leave,” Nickels said in the police report. “That was when he raised the golf club.”
Nickels raised his firearm and put Keeton on the ground, noting he did not know what Keeton’s intention was at that time.

“The property is mine,” Nickels said. “I own the property and he was not wanted and was asked to leave. He wouldn’t and said that he was looking for Officer N. Adams because of a prior incident.”

Keeton was taken into custody and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he remains at press time, facing the following charges: public intoxication – controlled substance (excludes alcohol); first-degree criminal trespassing; second-degree wanton endangerment; first-degree wanton endangerment; second-degree disorderly conduct; menacing; resisting arrest; and second-degree burglary (attempt).

A preliminary hearing in this felony case is set for August 15 at 10 a.m. at the Magoffin County Justice Center.
