SALYERSVILLE — Much-improved Phelps topped Magoffin County 70-56 in a game between two 15th Region boys’ basketball teams on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Phelps shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field. Scoring from various parts of the court consistently, Phelps connected on three of 11 three-point field goal attempts.
Phelps shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.
Active inside, Phelps outrebounded Magoffin County 38-34.
Tyler Weddington led Phelps with a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down a game-high 20 rebounds.
Accompanying Weddington in double figures for Phelps, Zade Rash scored 11 points and Knox Wallace netted 10 points.
Phelps received scoring from nine different players. Toby Adese (eight points), Jahmar Stewart (seven points), Reece Norman (five points), Christian Thacker (four points), Ethan Fields (two points) and Gavin Hamilton (one point) finished in single digits in Phelps’ scoring column.
Magoffin County shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the field. Reigning 15th Region boys’ basketball champion Magoffin County made three of 15 three-point field goal attempts.

Walker Russell paced Magoffin County, scoring a game-high 27 points and hauling in 15 rebounds for the host team.
Following Russell’s leading performance for Magoffin County, Tayte Hall posted 15 points.
Behind Hall, Caleb Lovely (six points), Michael Trusty (four points), Evan Reed (two points) and Blake Wireman (two points) were the other scorers for Magoffin County in the matchup.
