Rescue squad auction better than expected

SALYERSVILLE – While last year the rescue squad couldn’t have their annual auction due to COVID-19, the media auction was a true success.

The Magoffin County Rescue Squad held their 41st Annual Media Auction on May 6 and 7, and had plans to continue the auction on Saturday, May 8, but they sold out, which is something Magoffin County Rescue Squad Captain Carter Conley said had never happened.

While donations are still coming in, at press time the auction has raised $16,244. Last year they were unable to hold the auction, which usually brings in roughly $20,000 each year for operational costs, though they actually responded to more calls and provided more man hours – all volunteer – during 2020 than the year prior.

“It really was a success,” Conley told the Independent. “I wasn’t expecting we would get much with everything going on, but once, again, the people of Magoffin County have contributed enough to keep us going another year.”

Conley extended a heartfelt “thank you” to all who donated money or items or purchased items from the auction.

He also apologized to all of the businesses they would normally reach out to for the auction that they were able to contact.

“I really kept waiting and waiting, thinking we’d have another spike and couldn’t have it, or we would have to do something different, so we really only had a little over two weeks to plan and it was just a rush with what we were able to do,” Conley said.

The Magoffin County Rescue Squad is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing emergency aid and rescue to the people of Magoffin County.

“Over the last 10 years, we raised between $20,000 and $22,000 on average, so we are not too far off,” Conley said. “It really surprises me. I didn’t know what to expect, but was hoping for $10,000, so this was just a little ice cream on the cake. The people of Magoffin County came through, again.”

The rescue squad auction is usually their largest fundraiser, with the funds used to pay for maintenance, insurance and supplies.

Conley also noted that they are still accepting donations, which are tax deductible as approved by the Internal Revenue Service No. 51-0151531. Money can be sent to the Magoffin County Rescue Squad at mailing address PO Box 155, Salyersville, KY 41465.
