SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County honored senior guard Walker Russell for scoring his 1,500th career point in a game versus Martin County on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Prior to its home game versus Letcher County Central on Tuesday, Jan. 20, Magoffin County recognized Russell. Magoffin County Head Coach Scott Castle and MC Athletic Director Gabe Burchell presented Russell with a commemorative plaque.
Russell is among the top boys’ high school basketball players in the 15th Region. A candidate for 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year, Russell is averaging a team-high 20.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for the Hornets. The senior guard has scored 367 points and claimed 151 rebounds thus far in his senior campaign.
Russell is leading Magoffin County in both scoring and rebounding for the second straight season. As a junior in the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season, Russell averaged a team-high 26.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Hornets. Earlier in his high school career, Russell was a starter as a sophomore on Magoffin County’s 2023-24 15th Region boys’ basketball title team.
