SALYERSVILLE — Longtime leader Walker Russell led Magoffin County in both scoring and rebounding for the second straight boys’ high school basketball season.
As a senior, Russell averaged a team-high 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the Hornets. In 32 games, Russell scored 687 points and claimed 255 rebounds for the Hornets.
Russell ranked among the top boys’ high school basketball players in the 15th Region each of the last two seasons.
As a junior in the 2024-25 boys’ high school basketball season, Russell averaged a team-high 26.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Hornets. Russell netted 710 points and cleared out 247 rebounds as a junior.
Russell was the lone underclassman who started on Magoffin County’s 15th Region championship team in the 2023-24 boys’ high school season. As a sophomore in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season, Russell averaged 9.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game for the Hornets. Russell was Magoffin County’s second-leading rebounder as a sophomore.
With Russell leading the way, Magoffin County showed improvement in the 2025-26 boys’ high school basketball season.
The talented guard has received numerous honors and awards throughout his high school basketball career. Russell is one of Magoffin County’s top all-time boys’ high school basketball players.
