SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County pulled away to defeat visiting Menifee County 18-3 in four innings in a high school softball game on Tuesday, April 20.
Familiar foes from neighboring regions, Magoffin County and Menifee County met for the first time in the 2021 high school softball season.
The Hornets set the tone early. forcing Menifee County to play from behind. Magoffin County moved ahead and never allowed the visiting team to take control of the matchup.
Holly Handshoe earned the win in the circle for the Hornets. Handshoe allowed three runs on three hits while recording seven strikeouts.
Magoffin County, under the direction of veteran head coach Tony Skaggs, excelled offensively, scoring 18 runs on 15 hits.
Handshoe (2-for-2), Emilee Bailey (3-for-3, four RBIs), Rylie Castle (2-for-2, four RBIs), Presley Smith (2-for-2, two RBIs), Scarlett McCarty (2-for-3, two RBIs), Ashlyn Patrick (1-for-1, two RBIs), Katie Howard (1-for-3), Jaden Williams (1-for-2, one RBI) and Karlee Stewart (1-for-1) each contributed at the plate for the Hornets. Bailey legged out a triple for Magoffin County while Castle, Smith and Patrick each doubled.
The Hornets are scheduled to travel to Frenchburg for a game against Menifee County on May 6.
