SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County is set to host rival Martin County for its 57th District opener in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season on Friday, Dec. 10.
The Hornets are 2-1. Magoffin County has notched wins over Pike County Central and Morgan County. In between its two wins, Magoffin County dropped a game to much-improved Floyd Central.
The Hornets upended Pike County Central 78-73 in a season opener on Thursday, Dec. 2. However, Floyd Central forced Magoffin County to slip into the loss column, defeating the Hornets 68-61 on Saturday, Dec. 4.
But Magoffin County bounced back, pulling away to beat Morgan County 74-48 in a home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Martin County split its first two games in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season. Pikeville topped the Cardinals 74-60 in a season opener in Inez on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Managing to recover from the season-opening setback two days later, Martin County defeated visiting Russell, a squad which is considered to be among the top teams in the 16th Region, 70-63.

The Hornets swept a two-game 57th District boys’ basketball series from Martin County during the 2020-21 season.
