PRESTONSBURG — With freshman pitcher Michael Trusty leading the way, Magoffin County defeated Perry County Central 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2A, Section 8 Baseball Tournament at StoneCrest on Wednesday, April 9.
Magoffin County scored first and never trailed but the two teams were tied 1-1 at the conclusion of the fourth inning.
The Hornets scored twice in the top half of the fifth inning and added another run late in the game. Magoffin County crossed home plate again in the top half of the seventh inning.
Trusty pitched a complete game and earned the win on the mound. The Magoffin County pitcher allowed only one run on one hit. Trusty recorded 11 strikeouts.
Parker Maggard started on the mound for Perry County Central and suffered the loss. Maggard pitched five and one-third innings, allowing three runs on six hits while recording five strikeouts.
Jeffrey Hancock replaced Maggard on the mound and closed out the game for the Commodores. Hancock allowed one run on two hits.
Magoffin County plated four runs on eight hits. Trusty paced Magoffin County at the plate, finishing two-for-four with a double and two RBIs.
Contributing to Magoffin County’s offensive effort, Brayden Bailey, Mason Peck, Gavin Arnett, Chance Risner, Isaac Howard and Evan Reed each connected for one hit. Peck and Howard drove in one run apiece for the Hornets.
Offensively for Perry County Central, Connor Perkins delivered one hit, and Tate Watts drove in the Commodores’ lone run.
