Barnett leads Hornets over Lawrence County in triple overtime, 87-82

SALYERSVILLE — Aden Barnett poured in 30 points to lead Magoffin County over visiting Lawrence County 87-82 in triple overtime in a boys’ high school basketball game on Monday, Jan. 24.

After notching the win, Magoffin County improved to 9-10.

Following the loss, Lawrence County dropped to 18-4.

Multiple players stepped up for Magoffin County and contributed to the Hornets’ victory. Zane Whitaker added a double-double for the Hornets, scoring 23 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Providing a strong presence defensively for Magoffin County, Whitaker recorded three blocks.

In addition to pouring in 30 points for the Hornets, Barnett pulled down five rebounds and distributed five assists.

Accompanying two of his teammates in double figures for the Hornets, Grayson Whitaker scored 14 points and dished out four assists.

Magoffin County defeated Lawrence County after falling to the Bulldogs in the 2A, Section 8 championship game in Louisa earlier in the month.

The Hornets returned to the win column following back-to-back losses to 57th District rival Martin County and East Ridge.

The Bulldogs slipped into the loss column after reeling off three straight wins over Betsy Layne, Floyd Central and Pike County Central. Lawrence County is the current frontrunner in the 58th District. The Bulldogs knocked off reigning 58th District champion Betsy Layne 76-73 in overtime on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

Magoffin County and Lawrence County aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season.
