Barnett’s triple-double leads Hornets over Belfry, 62-59

BELFRY — Aden Barnett recorded a triple-double to lead visiting Magoffin County over Belfry 62-59 in a boys’ high school basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Magoffin County notched its second win over Belfry in the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.

Barnett scored 15 points, dealt out 12 assists and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Magoffin County to the win.

Magoffin County featured three scorers in double figures. Accompanying Barnett in double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Ben Lafferty added 14 points and Ethan Salyer contributed 12 points.

Walker Russell (seven points), Noah Sammons (six points), Reed Meadows (five points) and Brennan Hansen (three points) supplied Magoffin County’s other scoring in the win.

Belfry fared well offensively, shooting 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field. The Pirates connected on four of 11 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Belfry shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.

Jonathan Banks scored a game-high 24 points to pace the Pirates. Banks connected on nine of 18 field goal attempts.

Accompanying Banks in double figures for Belfry, Caden Woolum scored 13 points and Noah Brown netted 12 points.

Accounting for the rest of Belfry’s scoring, Cody Erwin added six points and Eric Daniels contributed four points.

The Hornets returned to the win column following back-to-back losses to Letcher County Central and 57th District rival Martin County.
