UPDATE 4/30/36: The Salyersville United States Post Office reopened midday today.
—
SALYERSVILLE – At press time, the Salyersville United States Post Office remains closed after a vehicle ran into the side of the building.
On Monday, April 27 a one-vehicle car accident yielded a large hole in the side of the post office, with the building closed to the public as it is assessed for safety.
Officials tell Mortimer Media Group a regional structural engineer looked at the building on Tuesday and sent the report to Atlanta, but they wouldn’t accept it.
As of Wednesday, an engineer from Chicago with the United States Postal Service was in Salyersville reevaluating the structural integrity of the building and completed his report, including some recommendations to make it more structurally sound, but he would not be able to submit his report until he returned to Chicago.
The post master told Mortimer Media Group they hope to have the post office reopened tomorrow, but the decision is out of their hands until USPS rules on the matter and whatever steps deemed necessary have been made.
